Senior Kyle Jones pulled out a 4th place finish in the 138lbs weight class— the best finish of his career at state.  Jones has been a 3-time State Qualifier and 2-time State Placer.

Senior Nathan Tucker also concluded his career with his highest finish at state with a 3rd place finish at 195lbs. Tucker finished his senior season with a 29-6 record.  In his career, he has been a 4-time State Qualifier and 3-Time State Placer.

Sophomore Rico Ashley managed a 3rd place finish at 145lbs—one of the toughest weight classes in the tournament.  For the season, Ashley finished with a record of 19-6.

Freshman D.J. Lundy finished in 3rd place in the 285lbs weight class, despite weighing just around 230lbs.  Lundy finishes his freshman season with a 33-4 record.

Sophomore Davion Pollard took 5th place in the 160lbs weight class. Pollard concludes his season with a 24-14 record.

Junior Keegan Moore was Irwin’s only other participant in the tournament at 132lbs.  Moore finished the season with a 16-12 record.

"I want to give a special thanks to Coaches Clayton Sirmans and Jay Durden," says Head Coach Ray Pierce. "They have done a great job with these wrestlers all season long. I’d also like to recognize Irwin’s Mat Girls who also put in a great amount of work over the weekend at the tournament.  Destin Mixon, Morgan Young, Christi Brown, and McKenzie Sumner ran multiple scoring tables for most of the tournament.  It was an honor our girls were invited to work the most prestigious event in Georgia wrestling.  Our Mat Girls Sponsor, Claire Clayton, volunteered to help work the tables as well. She has done a great job with these girls all season long and deserves the recognition for their performance. I received nothing but compliments about our Mat Girls from other coaches and officials throughout the tournament, and they are proud contributors to the Irwin County Wrestling family.

"I want to stress how very proud I am of all of these kids," continues Pierce. "This season has been one of the best I have had in a long time. I really hate to say goodbye to Kyle Jones, Andrew Marsh, and Nathan Tucker, but losing just three starters makes for an exciting upcoming season. Finally, to our fans, our wrestlers appreciate all of the support you have provided this season, and we hope to see you all back next season!"

2017 Wrestling Team     The wrestlers attended the Area 1A Traditional Tournament at Turner County High School (photo at right), finishing in 1st place as a team out of the 10 schools competing by over 20 points.  In addition, Irwin qualified 13 out of 14 weight classes for Sectionals next weekend at Darlington High School in Rome.  It marks the most Area Placers in school history.  After winning Area Duals a few weeks ago (see photo below), Irwin's wrestlers have won both Area championship formats.

Irwin had 5 wrestlers win Area Championships.  Senior Nathan Tucker (195lbs) finished in 1st place, with a dominant performance in the finals.  For Tucker, he made the Area Finals all 4 years of high school, winning 1st place three times.  Senior Kyle Jones (138lbs) made his second appearance in the Area Finals and pulled off his first Area Championship.  Sophomore Rico Ashley (145lbs) won the first tournament of his career in just his second season wrestling.  Freshman Wright Walker (106lbs) captured his first Area Title, defeating a State Runner-Up in the finals.  Freshman D.J. Lundy (285lbs) also won his first Area tournament over the toughest weight class in the tournament.

Senior Andrew Marsh (182lbs) made his first appearance in the finals, losing to an opponent with multiple State Tournament medals.  Marsh improved on his 3rd place finish from a year ago.  Sophomore Justin Wells (152lbs) also made the finals for the first time at the tournament.  Junior Keegan Moore (132lbs) took 3rd place in his weight class with a tough draw in the brackets in the semi-finals match.  Sophomores Mark Olds (113lbs), Will Tucker (120lbs), and Davion Pollard (160lbs) each finished in 3rd place at the event.  Junior D.J. Martin (170lbs) and Freshman Seth Pilcher (126lbs) took 4th place to also qualify for Sectionals next weekend.  Freshman Jyquez Marshall (220lbs) won 5th place and could possibly make Sectionals if an injury occurs.

After hosting Sectionals last year, Irwin will make the trip up to Rome next weekend.  There will be a total of 22 teams represented, and wrestlers must finish in the Top 4 to qualify for State the following weekend.  Traditional Sectional Brackets can be followed from the bottom of the GHSA wrestling website.  Irwin will be under the "A Sectional" for Class-A.  Wrestling should begin around 9:00AM.
