The Irwin County Lady Indians girls' basketball program had a unique and inspiring opportunity this past Sunday as they attended the Florida State University Lady Noles' game against Drexel University. The experience brought excitement and motivation for the Lady Indians, who had previously attended FSU's summer basketball camp and trained alongside some of the nation’s top talents.
During the camp, the Lady Indians worked with standout players like Ta'Niya Latson, Brianna Turnage, O'Mariah Gordon, and Carla Viegas. Latson, in particular, has made national headlines as the leading scorer in Division I women’s basketball. On Sunday, she put on a show for the ages, delivering an electrifying performance. Latson went 13-for-20 from the field, tallying 32 points, 7 assists, and 4 steals to lead her team to victory.
The Irwin County players took note of the Lady Noles’ poise and execution. Junior forward Miya Ford reflected on what she observed: “They were under control, they got to their spots on the floor, they communicated, and they made shots.” Ford’s observations highlight the importance of fundamentals, which the Lady Indians strive to emulate in their own season.
Adding to the excitement of the day, the team ran into familiar faces in the crowd. Irwin County natives Mrs. Barbara Cargile and her husband were thrilled to see their community represented at the game. They extended warm regards and best wishes to the Lady Indians and the entire Irwin County community.
The Lady Indians, currently sitting at 5-3 on the season, hope to carry the lessons and inspiration from Sunday’s experience into their upcoming games. They return to action tonight, facing Wilcox County at 6 PM at The Reservation. The matchup promises to be an exciting challenge as the Lady Indians look to add another win to their strong start.
This trip to FSU serves as a reminder of what hard work and dedication can achieve. Watching players like Ta'Niya Latson dominate at the highest level motivates the Lady Indians to strive for greatness on and off the court.
